Equality is a founding plank of my policy platform and I stand by my strong record on antidiscrimination issues. I have called on the Government to strengthen Victoria’s anti-discrimination laws and enhance the powers of the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner.
In Victoria it is against the law for someone to discriminate against you because of a characteristic that you have, or that they assume you have. Human rights are basic entitlements that belong to every one of us, regardless of our background, where we live, what we look like, what we think or what we believe.
Based on the values of freedom, equality, respect and dignity, human rights acknowledge the fundamental worth of each person. They are the cornerstone of strong, healthy communities where everyone can participate and be included.
Australians identify with more than 270 ancestries. This rich, cultural diversity is one of our great strengths. However the reality is, too many individuals and communities in Australia experience prejudice, discrimination and racism on a regular basis, despite our current laws. We need to promote a clear understanding in the Australian community of what discrimination is, and how it can be prevented and reduced. I will continue to drive change in this area.
I will continue to campaign in support of marriage equality.
