Mildura is set to become the new hemp capital of Victoria following the launch of a new trial into the viability of hemp production and cultivation in Sunraysia.
Speaking at SuniTAFE, Victorian Minister for Agriculture Jaclyn Symes said there was huge potential for hemp production to play a bigger role in the region’s agricultural sector and hopes were high the trial would lead to the establishment of a new local industry and jobs.
“Hemp is a promising emerging commodity that could have far-reaching benefits across Victoria, in particular for the Sunraysia region — that’s why we want to support the industry to grow,” Ms Symes said.
The trial is a partnership with SuniTAFE and Australian Primary Hemp to grow industrial hemp while trying to establish which varieties are most suited to this region’s warm and dry climate.
It has the backing of the Industrial Hemp Taskforce, which is co-chaired by Ms Symes, Member for Mildura Ali Cupper and Member for Northern Metropolitan Region Fiona Patten…
